Seminar contentResearch methods are key in carrying out research, and they one of the cornerstones of a PhD.
 This course is aimed at PhD level scholars who are interested in learning more about methodology (i.e. epistemology and ontology), qualitative research methods, and quantitative research methods.
 The course is proposed to give the students the skills and knowledge to: 1) understand, recognise, and defend their epistemology; 2) learn which are the main qualitative research methods, when to apply them, and their advantages and disadvantage; and, 3) quantitative research methods, when to apply them, and their advantages and disadvantages.

In the course we will discuss:
  • Epistemology
  • Qualitative research methods (content analysis, grounded theory, discourse analysis, and hermeneutics)
  • Quantitative research methods (parametric and non-parametric analyses))
  • Case studies and interviews
The objectives of this course are to teach students:
1) how to recognise the epistemology they are using and be able to defend; 2) the most used qualitative research methods, when to use them, and their advantages and disadvantages; and, 3) the most used quantitative research methods, when to use them, and their advantages and disadvantages

After completion of the course, the student:
1) Is able to understand epistemology and defend it;
2) Has advanced knowledge and understanding of qualitative research methods;
3) Has advanced knowledge and understanding of quantitative research methods;
4) Can recognise epistemology and qualitative and quantitative research methods in journal papers; and
5) Critically reflect on epistemology and research methods of their own research.
